Shaping the Future Together

Step by Step Towards Better Living Conditions for the Families of the Chepang Community in Ghyalchowk, Gorkha.

The Chepang are an indigenous Tibeto-Burman ethnic group living in the rugged ridges of the Mahabharat mountain range in central Nepal.

The Chepang are often described as the poorest of the poor in Nepal. Malnutrition amongst the Chepang is a long-standing problem. They have one of the highest illiteracy rates and the least access to basic public services such as drinking water, electricity, education and healthcare. Agriculture, on which most of them depend, does not provide enough food to last a whole year. Most of them survive by supplementing their income as day labourers.

Overcrowding in their homes – a typical Chepang house has a single room where all family members cook, eat and sleep together – leaves them vulnerable to infection if one family member falls ill.

Tara Namaste supports the Chepang community in Gandaki Village-7, Ghyalchowk Beltar, Gorkha

This Chepang community is situated on the banks of the Trishuli River, which flows between Dhading and Gorkha districts. 135 families live there below the poverty line. In 1992, the government built a primary school, which is now attended by around 80 pupils from the community. However, due to poverty, the children only attend school irregularly.

Tara Namaste’s involvement began in 2021 with the funding of English lessons. The precarious situation of the entire population has prompted us to do more for this community.

Tara Namaste aims to provide all Chepang children with access to basic schooling, ensure the necessary medical care in the village, and offer initial support to improve living conditions, particularly with regard to the children’s education and nutrition. In collaboration with the local community and the local authorities, the following sub-projects were launched in January and April 2023 respectively:
